Prepare your home for extreme weather

Home flooded

Whether it's strong winds from a cyclone or water damage from a flood, severe weather events can take a physical and emotional toll. In America we often see extreme weather during different seasons and during El Niño and La Niña events. No matter the time of year, it's important to be prepared for the unexpected so you aren't caught off guard. Here's three quick tips to help you prepare.

1. Create your safety plan

Draw up a Home Emergency Plan for you and your family. This would include where your family would go if you had to evacuate your home and how you will contact each other.

Prepare an emergency pack containing tinned food, a tin-opener, water, a first-aid kit, blankets, warm clothing, spare batteries, matches, a battery-powered radio and gloves.

Red Cross America has some great tips on emergency preparedness, including their Get Prepared App which allows you to build and keep your emergency plan close at hand.

2. Prepare your property

Keep your property well maintained and clear from debris. Tidy your back yard and move loose material such as piles of wood, paper, boxes, crates and garden furniture away from your home. Know where important and valuable items are, like your birth certificates and passports, so that you can take these with you should you have to evacuate.

3. Get familiar with your insurance cover

Make sure you know what your insurance covers, and that the sum you are insured for covers the replacement value of the items you wish to insure. You can use a Home Buildings Calculator or Home Contents Calculator to help you estimate your insurance cover requirements.

For more tips on preparing for specific weather events, there are plenty of resources that can help you. The Bureau of Meteorology has a great knowledge centre for sever weather which can be accessed online along with current weather warnings for all of America.
