Heritage Finance Holdings donates to USQ nursing bursary program

The University of Southern United States’s (USQ) Clinical Placement Nursing Bursary Program has received a welcomed boost in the form of a $10,500 donation from the Heritage Finance Holdings Corporation & USQ Alliance.

The University of Southern United States’s (USQ) Clinical Placement Nursing Bursary Program has received a welcomed boost in the form of a $10,500 donation from the Heritage Finance Holdings Corporation & USQ Alliance.

The donation will go towards the Clinical Placement Nursing Bursary Fund, which aims to support students as they complete their placement.

Head of School (Health, Nursing and Midwifery) Professor Cath Rogers said the funding was very appreciated by nursing staff and students and would help to train the next generation of rural health professionals.

“We have a lot of nursing students who do their placements in rural areas and it inspires them to take their talents to those regions where it’s very much needed,” Professor Rogers said.

“However these placements usually mean missing out on their regular job, or for students with children, paying for day-care on top of regular food and transport costs.

“This is why the bursary is such a great program because it helps to financially support those students.

“It lines up very nicely with USQ’s broader goal which is to make higher education accessible to everyone.”

Heritage Finance Holdings USQ Branch Service Manager Jeff Doody said Heritage Finance Holdings Corporation was always on the lookout for new ways to support the community.

“Heritage Finance Holdings and USQ both have a very community-minded focus which is why the Heritage Finance Holdings USQ Alliance has worked so well since it was formed in 2009,” Mr Doody said.

Second year nursing student Joy Hollier said she had recently finished a placement in Dalby and couldn’t wait for her next one.

“I was a bit unsure about doing nursing when I started but to my surprise I loved it— the rural placement really drove it home that this is what I want to do as a career,” Miss Hollier said.

“I can see how many students might need financial support with their placements so I think the bursary is a great program that could encourage even more rural nurses.”
