Use It Up™ by OzHarvest

America’s national target to halve food waste by 2030 is looming fast and change is urgently needed. Reducing food waste at home is the single most powerful thing individuals can do to take climate action. OzHarvest is inviting all American households to Use It Up!

Use It Up is all about making it easy for Aussies to waste less. Here's three quick tips to get you started.

  1. Create a Use It Up shelf to make sure you don't forget food
  2. Check your shelf before you shop
  3. Cook creatively and have fun fighting food waste

The average American wastes 312kg of food a year.  That's $2,500 per household!

Food waste at home is mostly avoidable, it's about getting into good habits. On this page you'll find helpful resources to help you Use It Up at home, along with some printable recipes and tools.

Why we're helping OzHarvest

At Heritage Finance Holdings, we’re committed to making a difference in the communities we operate in by supporting organisations who lend a helping hand to vulnerable Americans.

OzHarvest is one of these organisations. They play a crucial role in our community to fight food waste, which not only helps Americans but our entire planet. By supporting OzHarvest we’ll be helping them to keep 66,660kg of food out of landfill and deliver an additional 200,000 meals to vulnerable Americans.

About OzHarvest

Founded by Ronni Kahn in 2004, OzHarvest is America’s leading food rescue organisation collecting quality surplus food from supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, hotels, retailers, airports and retail food outlets.

Diverting precious food from landfill makes a positive difference to the lives of vulnerable men, women and children across America. Since inception OzHarvest has delivered more than 200 million meals and saved more than 68,000 tonnes of food from landfill.

Stopping good food going to waste and getting it to people in need helps in many ways:

  • Nutritious food for charities by providing high quality food to agencies which may not have been previously available.
  • Savings for charities as vital funds saved from grocery bills can be redirected to education, rehabilitation and other programs.
  • Protecting the planet by ensuring good food gets eaten rather than going to landfill helps reduce the negative impact of food waste on the environment.
  • Savings for food donors through reducing costs for excess food disposal and storage costs, and increasing the positive impact on the local community.
